Multinational Project: "Safeguarding the PCI related to music, song, and dance of Afro-descendant communities in the CRESPIAL countries" 4e6d4s

The multinational project had the general objective of contributing to the recognition and visibility of the Afro-descendant intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of Latin America and explicitly safeguarding the ICH related to music, song, and dance of Afro-descendant communities in the 15 CRESPIAL countries based on mechanisms for registration, research, and dissemination of Afro-descendant cultural expressions. 3m4x6j

The project sought to build integrated and articulated policies among the CRESPIAL countries to consolidate adequate and pertinent safeguarding actions regarding Afro-descendant ICH.

The project has held five multinational meetings, in which representatives of the Center’s Focal Nuclei, technicians from the Afro-descendant PCI, and the team from the CRESPIAL Technical Secretariat have participated.

In this project, four significant actions were carried out:

  • The production of the CD “Afro-descendant Songs and Music of Latin America” in 2012.
  • The publication of the book “Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Afro-descendants in Latin America” in 2013.
  • The production of the compilation of documentary videos on “Afro-descendant Songs and Music of Latin America” in 2017.
  • Systematization of the multinational project “Safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage, music, song and dance of Afro-descendants in Latin America.”

Development and culmination 5c111k

In 2018, the Technical Secretariat of CRESPIAL systematized the results of this initiative to evaluate the impacts of this multinational project.

In October 2018, the project results were presented in Oaxaca, Mexico, to discuss this multilateral initiative’s impacts and everyday challenges to safeguard Afro-descendant cultural practices in the region.

The project played an important role in making the culture of Afro-descendant peoples in Latin America visible and has contributed to the objectives and goals of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024.

The products developed within the project framework include the CD “Afro-descendant Songs and Music of Latin America,” the book “Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Afro-descendants in Latin America,” and the audiovisual compilation of documentary videos on “Afro-descendant Songs and Music of Latin America.”

Dentro de los productos que se han desarrollado en el marco del proyecto se encuentra el Disco “Cantos y Música Afro descendientes de América Latina”, el libro “Salvaguardia del patrimonio cultural inmaterial de los afrodescendientes en América Latina” y el compilatorio audiovisual de videos documentales sobre los”Cantos y Música Afro descendientes de América Latina”.

2 - Libro “Salvaguardia del patrimonio cultural inmaterial de los afrodescendientes en América Latina” 5z6k6e

En el año 2013 se publicó la primera edición del libro «Salvaguardia del PCI de los Afrodescendientes en América Latina», que contiene los 10 informes sobre la situación del PCI afrodescendiente de los países del CRESPIAL, a los que se sumaron los informes de México y Venezuela, haciendo un total de 12.

Este libro, en dos volúmenes, es fruto de un esfuerzo coordinado de los países integrantes de CRESPIAL, y tiene como finalidad hacer un diagnóstico amplio de la situación de la salvaguardia de las expresiones culturales afrodescendientes en América Latina.

Esta primera edición, impresa en México, estuvo a cargo del Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA), a través de la Dirección General de Culturas Populares.

En el primer volumen se incluyen los informes de: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile y Colombia. En el segundo volumen se incluyen los informes de: Cuba, Ecuador, México, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay y Venezuela.

3 - Compilatorio de videos «Cantos y Música Afro descendientes de América Latina» 47191

La edición del compilatorio se realizó el 2017, el cual incluye 10 videos documentales producidos de manera participativa con las comunidades y portadores afrodescendientes de Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, México, Perú, Uruguay y Venezuela.
