The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was adopted at the 32nd General Conference of UNESCO in October 2003 and entered into force on April 20, 2006. It is an instrument through which the States Parties undertake to maintain measures to ensure the viability of intangible cultural heritage in their territory.
Yucay Declaration 2005
The Yucay Declaration results from the first meeting to create CRESPIAL, held on August 22 and 23, 2005, in Cusco, Peru. It was signed by government and civil society representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
The document expresses these countries’ commitment to g the Agreement to create CRESPIAL and continue to discuss the Center’s guidelines and strategies from the perspective of a regional agenda.
Peru-UNESCO Agreement 2006
On February 22, 2006, UNESCO and the Peruvian government signed an agreement to create and operate the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Latin America (CRESPIAL), which will have its headquarters in Cusco (Peru).
The agreement specifies the Centre’s functions and objectives, the commitments that UNESCO and the Peruvian government assume for its operation, and the necessary mechanisms to allow the region’s countries to participate in this institution.
Brasilia Declaration 2006
Signed by representatives of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela, countries that participated in the Second CRESPIAL Meeting held in Brasilia (Brazil) between May 16 and 19, 2006.
The agreement specifies the Center’s functions and objectives, the commitments that UNESCO and the Peruvian Government assume for its operation, and the mechanisms necessary for the region’s countries to this organization.
Peru-UNESCO Agreement 2014
The Agreement between UNESCO and the Government of Peru regarding the renewal of the Agreement above was signed on July 21, 2014.
On January 22, 2015, the renewed Agreement between the Government of Peru and UNESCO regarding CRESPIAL came into force for six years, valid until 2021.
Peru-UNESCO Agreement 2024
On June 12, 2024, the Agreement between UNESCO and the Peruvian State regarding the operation of the Regional Center for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Latin America (CRESPIAL) was signed for 8 years.
The Agreement above is pending the internal improvement phase, after which the Agreement will enter into force.
