Category 2 Centres are institutions of excellence operating under the auspices of UNESCO and specializing in a specific area of ​​ICH. Their primary mission is to contribute to achieving the objectives of the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, adopted in 2003. Established at the initiative of UNESCO Member States, these centers represent a strategic partnership between the international organization and countries committed to preserving their intangible cultural heritage. 3425l

The global network of Category 2 PCI Centers consists of 8 centers distributed worldwide, each with a particular focus and specialization.

Each center operates independently but under the supervision of UNESCO. Its operation is based on a strategic action plan approved by the organization, which defines its objectives, activities, and resources.

Category 2 Centres:

The functions of the Centre are: a) To encourage its Member States to adopt the political, legislative and istrative provisions provided for in Article 13 of the Convention; b) To organize activities aimed at consolidating and strengthening the national capacities of the Region in the areas of identification, documentation, inventorying and safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage present in their territories in accordance with UNESCO’s global strategy in this area; c) To organize and promote cooperation between institutions and networks of professionals in its Member States in the area of ​​exchange of experiences, knowledge and techniques, particularly in relation to the intangible cultural heritage that is present in two or more of these States; d) To contribute to a better understanding of the Convention and its mechanisms at local, national and regional levels, to promote regional activities to raise awareness of the importance of intangible cultural heritage and to provide tools and methodologies for the inclusion of communities in safeguarding.

El objetivo principal es promover la Convención para la Salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial y contribuir a su aplicación en el sudeste de Europa, aumentar la participación de las comunidades, de los grupos y de las personas en la salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de los países, y fortalecer la capacidad de los Estados de la UNESCO del sudeste de Europa en materia de salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial.

Its objective is to promote the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and contribute to its implementation in the Asia-Pacific region, to increase the participation of communities, groups, and individuals in the safeguarding of ICH and to ensure a better understanding of ICH in the area and to ensure its respect, to strengthen capacities in ing the safeguarding of ICH through coordination activities and information dissemination.

The Centre aims to promote the Convention for the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage and its implementation in East Asia and Central Asia to strengthen capacities and cooperation in the region to enable the identification and inventory of intangible cultural heritage and the collection of information on it to contribute to its safeguarding, to strengthen the capacities of the region, to promote and coordinate scientific and technical studies that allow the development, management and evaluation of safeguarding measures for intangible cultural heritage present in the area, and to strengthen the capacities of the region to actively participate in the implementation of the 2003 Convention at the regional and international level.

The specific functions of the Centre are: (a) To implement extended- and short-term capacity-building programs and activities in the safeguarding of ICH based on the program developed by UNESCO for the effective implementation of the 2003 Convention; (b) To adapt capacity-building materials developed by UNESCO to the regional context and ensure their translation into Arabic; (c) To build networks among interested communities, groups, and individuals to strengthen the transmission and dissemination of ICH, organize public events and meetings at regional and international levels; (d) To strengthen international and regional networks to exchange information and knowledge on the safeguarding of ICH, including in the context of the Convention’s overall results framework and periodic reporting.
